Adventures on Two Wheels - A Guide to Cycling in Biei

“Riding through the Patchwork Hills with elegance. Exploring Biei by bicycle is a truly unique experience.

For those who have visited Biei or are considering a trip, while driving around Biei is enjoyable, cycling offers its own wonderful experiences! The roads in Biei have relatively low traffic, making it a safe and secure environment for cycling. Here, we’ll focus on ‘Traveling Biei by Bicycle’ and share some highlights!”

“Exploring Biei by bicycle offers many experiences that you can’t have in a car! You might think that ‘cycling up the hills’ sounds tiring, but worry not! You can easily rent electric-assisted bicycles, so steep climbs won’t be a problem at all!

On a bike, you can take your time to appreciate landscapes that you might miss when driving. If you find a favorite view, you can easily stop and take photos. Why not capture some memories with your bicycle as a part of your adventure?”

○ A Request from Biei Town ○
There is one important thing we ask you to keep in mind while exploring Biei by bicycle. Please refrain from entering agricultural land. The soles of your shoes and bicycle tires may carry bacteria that could negatively impact crops. We kindly request that you only cycle on paved roads.”

“About Bicycle Rental Locations and Fees

In Biei Town, there are several bicycle rental shops, most of which are within walking distance from JR Biei Station. You can also rent bicycles at the ‘Roadside Station Biei Shirogane Birke,’ which opened as the second roadside station in Biei in 2018. More details about this location will be provided later! ^^”

“Bicycle Rentals at Roadside Station Biei ‘Shirogane Birke’

At the bicycle rental shops in Biei Town, you can find both regular bicycles and electric-assisted bicycles. Prices vary depending on the type of bicycle and rental duration, but a typical rate is around 600 yen per hour. While electric-assisted bicycles are more expensive than regular ones, Biei, known as the ‘Town of Hills,’ has many slopes, so we highly recommend choosing an electric-assisted bicycle.”

〇 Important Points for Rental 〇

  • Bicycle tours in Biei are popular not only among domestic visitors but also international travelers. Since the number of bicycles is limited, we recommend arriving at the rental shop early.
  • Most bicycle rental shops in Biei close between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM. Please be aware of the shop hours in advance and return the bicycle within the specified time.
  • In the event of an accident or if the bicycle becomes damaged, you may be responsible for repair costs. Let’s enjoy cycling while following traffic rules.”

Cycling in an unfamiliar area. What if I get lost…?

‘The bicycle doesn’t have a GPS, and I’m a bit anxious…’
If you feel this way, it’s reassuring to start your journey with a Biei Town roadmap!
The roadmap is available in Japanese, Chinese, English, and Korean. It’s also handy to carry pamphlets and flyers about Biei along with the roadmap. You might even be able to take photos at the same spots featured in the brochures! :)”

“There are many other pamphlets and flyers about Biei Town!

Biei Town has installed information signs that indicate the direction and distance to nearby attractions. Even if you happen to get lost, the roads in Biei are not complicated, so just by looking at the map, you can easily determine where you are.”

Clear and easy-to-read information signs can help you communicate your location in case of accidents or other troubles.

It’s a common experience in Biei that mobile phones may lose signal in some areas. Therefore, when cycling through the hills, we recommend using a paper map instead of relying on your phone. If you encounter any issues, such as a flat tire or a chain falling off, please contact the Biei Town Tourism Association (Tel: 0166-92-4378).

(*Note: It’s dangerous to operate your smartphone while cycling, so be sure to stop and get off your bicycle before using it.)

Cycling on a sunny day with a refreshing breeze is the best!

○ Important Points While Cycling ○

Please only cycle on paved asphalt areas.

If you are unsure whether the road you are on is private property, check the map. Roads not marked on the map may be private, so please return to the asphalt path and continue enjoying your cycling experience.”

About Transportation and Safety

‘Isn’t cycling for sightseeing dangerous?’
The roads in Biei Town are wider and have less traffic compared to urban areas, allowing for safe and comfortable cycling. However, there are rules for cycling, such as ‘no using smartphones while riding’ and ‘no riding double,’ so it’s a good idea to do some basic research on these regulations in advance for your peace of mind.”

○ Important Points About Traffic ○

While cycling, always ride on the left side of the road and do not go against traffic.

Reduce your speed significantly when approaching intersections.

If there is a ‘Stop’ sign, come to a complete stop rather than just slowing down. Before you start riding again, make sure to check your surroundings for safety.

The ‘Stop’ sign is commonly triangular in Japan, but the international standard is an octagon.

This is a common occurrence in Biei, but sometimes large tractors or combines may be right behind you. In such cases, it’s best to stop and give priority to the agricultural machinery. ^^

About Your Belongings

In Biei, the weather can change suddenly, with sunshine giving way to rain in no time. It’s a good idea to bring a raincoat or poncho for unexpected showers. In spring and autumn, there can be sharp drops in temperature, so having a sweater or jacket on hand will help you stay comfortable while cycling.

Among your belongings, one of the most important items is your smartphone! Be sure to capture the stunning views that can only be experienced while cycling! If you’re worried about battery life, bringing a portable charger is a great idea.

The hills of Biei are full of photo opportunities!

How to Get to the Blue Pond

The Blue Pond is about 18 km from the center of Biei Town, taking roughly two hours by bicycle one way. The route from the town center to the Blue Pond features gentle slopes, so we also recommend using an electric-assisted bicycle for this ride.

By the way, a new cycling path leading to the Blue Pond was completed in the spring of 2020. It runs alongside the Blue River, allowing you to enjoy beautiful views of the river and surrounding trees!

Cycling amidst the rich natural scenery is a soothing experience for both the body and mind.

If you’re not confident in your physical stamina, we recommend traveling by car or bus to Roadside Station Biei ‘Shirogane Birke’ and renting a bicycle from there. On the other hand, if you feel fit, consider visiting ‘Shirahige Falls’ and ‘Shirogane Onsen’ along with the Blue Pond!

A stunning blue vista awaits at the finish line!

If you’re feeling anxious about cycling alone, we recommend joining a Biei cycling tour.

With a guide leading the way, you can enjoy the experience with peace of mind. ^^

Spend your time at recommended sightseeing spots and create your own unique memories!
